I was recently asked, "Why on earth would you write a novel centered around curling?"
The short answer, I guess, is that I was once told to "Write what you know and write what you love." Well, I know a little bit about curling and I certainly love to do it, even though I'm not really a very good player. So I set out to try to write my first novel, setting it in Scotland, curling's home, and Maine, my home.
I once read a review of a novel that went something like, "It seems like the author just made it up as he went along." Duh. That's exactly what happened for me as characters, events, and locations changed and evolved, and as The Stones of Ailsa Craig was born.
